Filicudi

Filicudi belongs with its neighboring islands of Lipari, Stromboli, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea and Alicudi to the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands, which lie in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the north coast of Sicily.

It belongs to the municipality of Lipari in the province of Messina.

Geography

The island is 9.5 km ² and consists of three inactive volcanoes, the Monte Fossa delle Felci highest with 774 m elevation of the island, the Montagnola ( 383 m ) and the Torrione (280 m). To the southeast, close to a small plateau and the Capo Graziano Peninsula. Filicudi is rich in caves such as the Grotta del Bue Marino on the southwest coast. The ancient name of the island was Phenicusa as they used to be overgrown with fern. Filicudi is the oldest and also the first populated island of the Aeolian archipelago with 1 million year old volcanic rock.

The approximately 250 residents and artists who have settled here, such as Ettore Sottsass and Roland Zoss, live mainly in the southern part in the ports Filicodi postage and Pecorini and in Valdichiesa, which lies at an altitude of 280 m.

Tourism

  • Tourist Filicudi is suitable for swimming, snorkeling, diving and windsurfing in the fall. In addition, botanical walks and bird watching are possible.
