Filippino Lippi

Filippino Lippi (c. 1457 in Prato, † April 18, 1504 in Florence) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. With the troubled lines and the sometimes sombre coloring of his late work he was a forerunner of Italian Mannerism. The first name Filippino is a later designation of an art historian in distinction to his father, in his time he was called Filippo, and was even called that.

Life

Lippi learned to paint in the painting workshop of his father Fra Filippo Lippi, after his death in 1469 in the workshop of Fra Don Diamante, a friend of his father. His early work was influenced by the painter Sandro Botticelli, where he worked since 1472 and who had been a pupil of his father. In addition, his works have been greatly inspired by Flemish painting. From 1482 to 1484 completed Filippino Lippi frescoes by Masaccio in the Brancacci Chapel of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence. At times he lived in Rome, where he studied the ancient world. From 1489 to 1493 he created the frescoes in the Carafa Chapel of the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, at that time the Roman Church of the Florentines. His main client was Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, his specialty fresco painting.

Of his contemporaries was ' Filippo ' highly praised and described as polite and amiable companion and fellow citizens. He was considered very sensitive, but humorous. He died of an acute throat infection. His three young sons and his wife Maddalena di Piero Paolo Monti, whom he had married in 1497, he left a large fortune and several houses.
