Filippo Tancredi

Filippo Tancredi (* 1655 in Messina, † 1722 in Palermo) was an Italian painter of the Baroque in Sicily.

Life

Son of a lesser-known painter Pietro Tancredi, from which he probably received his early education. He then went to Naples in the workshop of his uncle Filippo Giannetto and finally Carlo Maratta, whose late Baroque style of painting spread to Rome by his numerous students all over Italy. 1708 settled down Tancredi in Palermo. His high level of technical skill and his sense of color and form made ​​him one of the most popular painters of his time in Sicily.

Towards the end of the 17th century he painted commissioned by the City Alcara li Fusi near Messina, for the Oratorio di San Giacomo in Messina and the Santuario di San Paolino in Sutera panel paintings. Otherwise, he was primarily active as a painter of frescoes.

The earthquake of Messina in 1908 most of his frescoes in Messina and surrounding towns have been lost.
