Fillgraderstiege

The Filigraderstiege is a stair system in the 6th district of Vienna Mariahilf. It combines the Fillgradergasse with Theobald alley.

History

The staircase was built in 1905-1907 to designs by the architect Max Hegele and is attributed to the Viennese Art Nouveau. It overcomes some of the difference in level between the Wien River in the south and in the north of Mariahilf Mariahilferstraße. The plant was named after the bell-founder 's widow Marie Anna Fillgrader, the beneficent engaged in this area.

After one of the two stair wing had to be closed due to structural damage in 1981, the facility was renovated from 1982 to 1984, including the Art Nouveau elements have been restored and installed a drainage system. In the hitherto unused interior staircase of a street cafe with art gallery was built in 1984-1985, which opened ( closed since 2010) on 1 August 1985.

2004 was chosen as the now landmarked Filigraderstiege by a jury of 80 art professors to become the fourth most beautiful staircase in Europe in the course of an international investigation.
