Fillmore District, San Francisco

The Fillmore refers to a neighborhood in San Francisco in the U.S. state of California. The location is not precisely defined. The neighborhood is a branch of Western Addition and is isolated from the Fillmore Street to the west, the Van Ness Avenue in the east, the Geary Boulevard to the north and the Grove Street to the south.

History

In the 19th century a Jewish community was settled with farmland here. Around the turn of the century Japanese immigrants came to San Francisco and settled here. After the great earthquake of 1906, the area was heavily damaged. During the reconstruction of the city center, local trade took place here reinforced. After 1942, during the Second World War, the Japanese immigrants were interned, and the district thus attractive for African-American workers and artists. After 1948, the decaying neighborhood was advertised as a redevelopment area. Today it is a mixed neighborhood, reside here over 50 percent of blacks, about 27 percent white and 14 percent Asian.
