Filosofem

Occupation

  • All instruments: Varg Vikernes

Filosofem ( Norwegian for, philosopheme ') is the fourth album by Varg Vikernes ' music project Burzum. It was recorded in 1993 but released because of incarceration Vikernes ' until 1996.

Formation

The album was recorded with the simplest means. For the guitar Vikernes used a fuzz pedal and a 1/ 4 " line input and for singing a headset. The guitars have an extremely sawn and dry sound. Nevertheless, the album has good production quality. For Title darkness a music video was produced, which in the meantime was also seen on some music channels, including the British VH -1. This was earlier download of listed on the Burzum website mirror, now is there a YouTube integration.

Shaping

The album cover shows a detail of the drawing under Op Fjeldet toner en Lur by Theodor Kittelsen. It shows a girl with a wooden trumpet. More illustrations by Kittelsen be found in the booklet.

Title list

There is a version with Norwegian and English titles (which is seen by Vikernes than the original) and the better-known German version, which was listed on the first pressing. Otherwise, however, the albums are identical.

Music style

Because of the relatively strong ambient component and the unusual sound pattern differs Filosofem from the previous Burzum releases. Also, the song is no longer moaning but recalled due to the distortion of dark -electro - typical screams that no longer have much in common with that for Burzum before typical high screech.

The first three items are the Black Metal assign. Drums, guitar riffs and keyboard passages are extremely repetitive. The piece of ambient music tour of the transcendental Pillar of Singularity for example, consists essentially of two parts, each consisting in almost unchanged keyboard passages. The rest of the 6 songs stylistically still to settle in the Black Metal, though overall the pace (especially the chord changes on the guitar ) for this style of music remains low. Darkness and Beholding the daughters of the firmament are examples of this slow pace. Other examples of typical Stilelemte of the album are the song Jesus ' death [ sic] with an almost continuous double bass, or infirmity I and II, which included guitar tracks, but no drums; the titles move between Black Metal and Dark Ambient. The song Darkness ( Burzum is a word for ' darkness ', see languages and scripts in Tolkien's world ) was the first Burzum title that Vikernes wrote. He was originally supposed to debut, but Vikernes was unhappy with the sound quality and took him six months later again.

Reviews

Filosofem had a relatively high sales success for a Black Metal album, which is due primarily to the recognition of Vikernes. The reviews were mostly positive. Robert Müller from Metal Hammer designated tour of the transcendental Pillar of Singularity as " nearly endless keyboard composition, which I can not see anything, would write about the worthwhile ", but the album containing the " four previously best Burzum songs ". He gave Filosofem five of seven points.
