An endowed chair is a chair that is not paid or not exclusively from the basic budget of a university, but is wholly or partly financed by a third-party funding. Endowed chairs are sometimes donated by foundations such as the Volkswagen Foundation, the Donors' Association for German Science or companies. Usually these chairs are limited, such as five years.
