Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes (Eng. "Finger Lakes" ) are a group of lakes in the north of the American state of New York.

They were named after the all eleven lakes own oblong shape and north-south orientation. Thus, as the Cayuga Lake, the largest lake group, a length of about 65 km, is at its widest point, but only about 5 km wide. The result are the Finger Lakes during the last ice age, when dug at the site of today's huge lake glacier tongues into the ground.

The Finger Lakes following eleven lakes are counted ( from east to west ) in the strict sense:

• Otisco Lake
• Skaneateles Lake
• Owasco Lake
• Cayuga Lake
• Seneca Lake
• Keuka Lake
• Canandaigua Lake
• Honeoye Lake
• Canadice Lake
• Hemlock Lake
• Conesus Lake

The Oneida Lake northeast of Syracuse is sometimes counted as a " thumb " to the Finger Lakes. The Onondaga Lake is located north of the Finger Lakes, but is not counted among them. In the region there are still numerous smaller lakes, including Silver Lake, the Waneta Lake and Lake Lamoka.

Viniculture

Since 1839 Lakes wine is grown in the region of his fingers. 2010 was the area in which both white and red wines are grown, the largest wine region in upstate New York to California and the second largest in the United States.
