Finnish parliamentary election, 1936

The parliamentary election in Finland in 1936 (Finnish Eduskuntavaalit 1936; Swedish Riksdagsvalet 1936) took place on 1 and 2 July 1936. It was the elections to the 16th Parliament of Finland.

Since 1932 Toivo Kivimäki led from the Progress Party, consisting of a Land League, the Progressive Party and the Swedish People's Party coalition. After the events around the Lapua movement of the early 1930s, one could speak of a stabilization of democracy in Finland, after the conservative National Coalition Party and the nationalist Patriotic People's Movement no longer competed together in a coalition in the 1936 election. The collection party had nevertheless won a significant loss of this alliance and received only 10.4% of the vote.

As of 1936, the Social Democrats in 1933 were the biggest winners. They received 38.6 % of the vote and placed 83 of the 200 seats in parliament. Four seats lost the Progressive Party of former Prime Minister Toivo Kivimäki.

Election result

The turnout was 62.9 %, which is 0.7 percentage points higher than the turnout at the last parliamentary election in 1933.

After the election

The ratio between the strongest power, the social democratic SDP, and the Land League had improved. So it was after the election between these parties talks about a possible government. President Svinhufvud not handed after a protest of the collection, however, the Social Democrat Party Väinö Tanner, the task of forming a government. but the Land League politician Kyösti Kallio. This now formed together with the Progressive Party, a minority government. However, the Cabinet Kallio IV should not even last for half a year, since Kallio was elected president and this office on March 1, 1937 took.

After that formed Aimo Cajander, the Prime Minister was the third time, of the Progress Party a majority government capable of Social Democrats, Land League, the Swedish People's Party and the Progress Party. This government lasted until December 1, 1939.
