Finow

The former Finow in Heegermühler lock (now Finowkanal )

The Finow [fi ː no ː ] is a small river in the north- east of Brandenburg and a right tributary of the Finow channel

Course

The Finow has its beginning in the west of Biesenthal Barnim as an outflow of Regesesees whose tributaries are the Hellmühler flow and the flow Rüdnitzer. It is about 13.7 km long and flows west of Finowfurt in the Finowkanal. About the longest flow path ( with Hellmühler flow ), the length is approximately 21 kilometers.

Original course

The Finow culminated originally east of Niederfinow in the Oder. After the building of the Oder channel in the middle of the 18th century, or did not flow around the island of New Hagen around. The Finow now culminated in an oxbow lake of the Oder, which was expected after only a few generations to Finow added and even today is still called Old Finow. The mouth was thus on the Oder Berger Lake (also an oxbow lake of the Oder) between Liepe and Odersberg.

Your underflow was already channeled from 1603 to 1620 and was part of the Finow channel. Between the former brass factory port and below the Heegermühler lock parts of the first Finow channel and the brass work digging in the former riverbed of the Finow have been preserved.

Another part of the Old Finow has remained south of the channel Finow get in place Niederfinow, a longer section to the east at the pumping station Liepe.

Glacial valley

The Finow leads past the weir mill Biesenthal and reaches just to the north of the city Eberswalde glacial valley. A special feature of the river use the glacial valley opposite to the original direction of flow. It flows to the east; the primordial stream flowed westward. Cause is the Oder very deep, which moved the drainage itself, as well as in the city of Eberswalde existing Toteisblöcke that created with its damming pool, which also diverted the river to the east.

Tourism

A very well established bike ( towpath ) makes it possible to follow the course of Finow and to get an impression of the landscape and nature.
