Fire Dynamics Simulator

The Fire Dynamics Simulator ( FDS ) is an internationally popular program for the simulation of fires. These simulated FDS, among other three-dimensional flows based on the Navier -Stokes equations, the underlying fire process, the spread of fire and smoke fire and thermal radiation. In German-speaking programs for simulation of flows as a ' box model ', internationally as CFD codes (Computational Fluid Dynamics ) are known.

The software is distributed as free software in the source code unconditionally ( public domain ).

Smokeview

Part of the FDS program package is Smokeview (SMV ). While FDS as a pure simulation program only simulates the fire scenarios to be created in a text editor, the results are visualized by Smokeview. These dominated Smokeview different representation techniques. The evaluation can be performed both two-and three-dimensional, as a still picture or animated. A special feature here is the almost photo- realistic colored visualization of smoke to call.

FDS Evac

FDS offers the simulation of fire- induced currents own model for the implementation of evacuation simulations ( FDS Evac ), which is developed by Timo Korhonen at the VTT.

Development

FDS and Smokeview are essentially at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology ( NIST) by Kevin McGrattan, Glenn Forney, Randy McDermott and Kristopher Overholt developed and there for free and open -source code available for download.

For some years, but are also significant parts of the program by other organizations, such as the Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT, contributed. In particular, here are Jason Floyd ( Hughes Associates, Inc.) and Simo Hostikka (VTT ) to call.

The current version 6 of FDS and SMV has brought about some changes. In addition to significantly improved model to simulate the combustion process FDS offers 6 the first time a model for simulation of ventilation systems.
