Firefly Studios

Firefly Studios is a British game developer based in London, which specializes in the development of computer strategy games.

Known is the development company best known for its medieval castle building simulations of the Stronghold series. The game and its successor sold over 6 million copies worldwide and received numerous awards.

History

Firefly was founded in August 1999 by Simon Bradbury, Eric Ouellette and David Lester. They had previously worked together on several successful strategy games, including the games series Caesar and Lords of the Realm.

The first title that developed the studio, Stronghold was in 2001, could be obtained for the Gathering of Developers as a publisher and Take 2 Interactive as a distributor. The game received positive reviews.

In September 2002, the first successor of the castle building simulation, Stronghold Crusader, which shifted the venue of the game in the Middle East at the time of the Crusades appeared.

After almost five years of existence Firefly expanded in February 2004 to the other side of the Atlantic and opened a development studio in Canton, Connecticut in the USA. The U.S. studio is engaged in the development of another strategy game.

Stronghold 2 was released on 22 April 2005 in the U.S. and in the UK and on 29 April in Germany. It features 3D graphics and expanded the concept of Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader to various characteristics. As a publisher, the Take 2 label 2K Games was responsible.

In 2006 he Stronghold Legends for the first time with fantasy creatures such as giants or werewolves, but is mainly based on Stronghold 2 and is heavily based on the Arthurian legend. Also, there are three different breeds with partially different units. For the first time, there are also heroes who have special abilities - these can, for example, Knight summon. In multiplayer, there is a new game mode - King of the Hill - where a specific spot on the map must be protected from enemies as long as possible.

The latest game of the studio is Stronghold 3, which focuses more on the first version of the game, however, by critics and fans for publication in view of numerous bugs has been criticized as being " unfinished ". In May 2012, appeared with Stronghold 3 Gold an improved and extended version of the game, the purchasers of the original version could download for free. About the distribution platform Steam, which simultaneously acts as DRM, appeared in 2012 the paid expansion Blackstaff in the form of the Download Content (DLC).
