Firmus (4th-century usurper)
Firmus was a Roman usurper against Valentinian I in the West (ca. 372-375 ).
Firmus was from the province of Africa, and was the son of a native princes. Flavius Theodosius, the father of Theodosius I, 373 came to North Africa to capture the unfaithful governor Romanus. Apparently were also Romanus and Firmus in dispute. Firmus had previously rebelled against Romanus and may have been proclaimed emperor. There was no understanding with Flavius Theodosius. The conflict took place mainly in the regions of Mauretania Mauretania Caesariensis and Sitifensis. Firmus, committed suicide when it became clear that he was beaten and Theodosius would fall into their hands.
