First day of issue

Under a first day cancellation is defined as a postmark, stamp whose date coincides with the first day of the order canceled postage stamp.

History

Before collecting Ersttagsbelegen such as First Day and First Day Covers became very popular, they were considered rarities. They were ( until about 1914) sought to classic issues rather for philatelic research purposes or as historical evidence as a result of political changes (such as imperial successor states ).

Over the years, these documents developed more and more from the postal benefits away to a pure collector's item. Stamps were purchased to be canceled immediately. The original use of a postal document, namely to be delivered through the mail, has been lost since at least the 1960s so. This self- purpose and high-volume resulted in a total drop in prices.

Variants

Germany

Austria

  • First-day postmark: ( vulgo: " date stamp from first day " ):

Any date stamp, only the date is relevant and must match the first day of the brand (eg: March 22, 1974)

  • First day- additional cancellation: In common usage, usually only " first-day stamp ": To Ersttagsstempel as such clearly highlighted, an official auxiliary temple has been introduced. He could only be attached to Ersttagen, in addition to the brand and shared with the depreciating stamps. He has no place or date, so it has no meaning but only a postal philatelic.
