First Fleet

When the First Fleet, the fleet of ships is called, the 1787 Portsmouth in England left on May 13 to colonize Australia. On board were a total of 756 prisoners and 550 crew members. Commander of the fleet of 11 ships was captain zS Arthur Phillip.

Travel

On January 26, 1788 (now celebrated as Australia Day ), the fleet arrived after driving about Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro and the Cape of Good Hope in Sydney Cove ( cove of Port Jackson ), where a first settlement was established. The new settlement was named in honor of the then British Home Secretary Lord Sydney. The fleet sailed to Norfolk Iceland, where another settlement was founded.

The fleet consisted of 11 vessels:

  • Friendship
  • Lady Penrhyn
  • Prince of Wales
  • Scarborough
  • Borrowdale
  • Fishburn
  • Golden Grove

Models of all the ships are on display at the Museum of Sydney.

Nine today related services in Sydney harbor ferries are named after ships of the First Fleet (not currently used Lady Penrhyn and Prince Of Wales).
