First Intermediate Period of Egypt

The First Intermediate Period includes the time of 2216 BC - 2025 BC in Ancient Egypt. After the 6th dynasty of Egypt and breaks down under the dominions of the newly created two cities to reach a particular influence: Thebes and Herakleopolis.

The Heracleopolitan living in Lower Egypt, to bring breakaway territories under control succeeds. The Theban Mentuhotep II succeeds after his ascent to 2025 BC, to unite Lower and Upper Egypt again. Nubia is recaptured to Wawat.

7 Dynasty

According to Manetho, ruled in this dynasty 70 kings in 70 days. There are no traces were found that could be assigned to this dynasty.

Dynasty 8

From 2216 BC - 2170 BC ruled in Memphis the 8th dynasty.

In the approximately 50 years after the end of the 6th dynasty probably have 17 kings logged in Memphis as their successor to the throne, but never exercised any real power over both countries. The order is completely uncertain. Therefore, our chronology is based on the King List of Abydos.

9th dynasty and 10th dynasty

To 2170 BC, the power of the ruling in Herakleopolis nomarchs has become so strong that the Memphite nome was incorporated into their domain. It starts the 9th and 10th dynasty, however, the Nile Valley controlled only to Assiut. South of Assiut formed at the same time with its capital Thebes, another territory. The 9th and 10th dynasty in Herakleopolis had 12-18 Kings, the exact sequence and dating is unknown, some names are lost fully or partially.

At the king charts of Abydos and Saqqara these kings are missing altogether. In the Turin papyrus kings 2 and 10 to 18 are lost.

While the princes saw as the rightful successor of the kings of the Old Kingdom in Herakleopolis ( here summarized as the 9th and 10th Dynasty), was born in Thebes at the same time a strong princely family, the 11th Dynasty.

11th Dynasty

The first kings of the 11th Dynasty are still basically the First Intermediate Period. Mentuhotep II succeeded eventually to unite between his 14th and 39th year of reign the kingdom again. With unification the Middle Kingdom begins.
