First Lutheran hymnal

The eight- song book entitled " Etlich Cristlich lider / hymn and psalm " is the first German -speaking Protestant hymnal, published in 1524. It is in some ways the precursor of all Protestant hymnals, along with the songbook of John Walter ( also 1524) and the Erfurt Enchiridion.

Content

The font, which is rather " a loose booksellers Summary" of circulating as broadsheets songs as a schedule compiled Hymns, was printed at the turn of 1523/1524 in Nuremberg by Jobst Gutknecht. From camouflage the title page not Nuremberg, but Wittenberg as an apparition. The booklet contains twelve pages eight songs ( five tunes), four of Martin Luther. Three come from Paul Speratus, and one is anonymous and Justus Jonas variously been attributed to the elder.
