First Quarter Storm

The First Quarter Storm First Quarter Storm also called Movement, is a left -wing political student movement, the limited period from January to March 1970 on the capital of the Philippines Manila and the Metro Manila region. On the motion of numerous student organizations were involved, including the National Union of Students of the Philippines ( NUSP ). The movement was influenced by the '68 movement, but also from Marxism and Maoism. Main centers of the movement were the University of the Philippines, Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the University of the East.

The demonstrations began on January 26, 1970, the House of Representatives of the Philippines on the occasion of a speech by the then President Ferdinand Marcos. The protests turned against the official leadership, the growing corruption of the government, the poverty of the population and the alliance with the U.S. during the Vietnam War. As of January 30, 1970, there were the first violent clashes with the police who tried to resolve the initially peaceful demonstrations by force. Then There were heavy street battles. In the night of 30 January 31, hundreds of students were arrested and four killed.

The demonstrations and student unrest continued until March 1970 on, but paralyzed, as several thousand students imprisoned, tortured, and dozens were killed. Also, the movement radicalized partly rapidly, several hundred students went to the unrest in the underground and joined the Maoist Nuevo Ejército del Pueblo. Others went into politics or into exile.
