Fishhook is a census -designated place (CDP ) in Matanuska- Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States.

Geography

Fishhook is northwest of Palmer and north of Lakes and Farm Loop. The development of the area was favored by the Wasilla - Fishhook Road and the Fishhook - Willow Road, which passes north of the Little Susitna River in Hatcher Pass Road. Fishhook is about 40 to 60 minutes drive from Anchorage.

History

Fishhook was named after the Fishhook Creek, which flows north-west of Palmer in the Little Susitna River. 1906 was found at the bottom of the Fishhook Creek gold. A year later, a gold mine was built in the area. This led to a massive influx of prospectors, which eventually resulted in the establishment of the Willow Creek Mining District. The Carle Wagon Road (now Wasilla - Fishhook Road) was built to carry cargo to the gold mines. Hatcher Pass was a preferred area for the employees working in the gold mines miners and other residents. A cable car and a ski lift were at Hatcher Pass, and to the new safety regulations was no longer possible in 1972. Currently, a world-class ski resort at Government Peak is in the planning.

Economy

The economy is based on retail sales. Many residents work in Anchorage, Palmer and Wasilla, or are employed in the public service at the municipal office of the CDPs, the boroughs and the federal government. Independence Mine State Historical Park and Hatcher Pass are the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The George Parks Highway, the Glenn Highway and other local roads connect the area with Anchorage, the rest of the state and Canada. The Alaska Railroad serves routes to Fairbanks and Seward.
