Fisk University

The Fisk University ( Fisk University) in Nashville is a private college for African-Americans, which was founded in 1866. Its former name was The Fisk Freed Colored School. In 1930 the Fisk University, the first African-American educational institution that has been recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges. Patron saint of the University is the General Clinton Bowen Fisk (1828 - 1890), who had fought for the desegregation. At Fisk University, there are currently (as of 2012) 800 study places. The university is well known for promoting African-American musical tradition. Known Fisk graduates are: Lil Hardin Armstrong, Constance Baker Motley, Hank Duncan, Henry Wells, John Hope Franklin, Elmer Imes and Wade H. McCree.
