Fiskardo

Fiskardo (Greek Φισκάρδο (n. sg. ) ) Is a harbor city (2011 ) 238 inhabitants in the north of the Ionian island of Kefalonia. Administratively, the town belongs to the municipality Erisos the municipality Kefalonia.

The city is, as the whole north of the island remained largely spared from the earthquake of 1953. Because of the historical buildings and the small port they developed early tourist attraction.

History

In ancient times the city was founded in 13 AD " Πάνορμος " ( Panormos ) was called in the 11th century it was settled by Normans, who named it after their king Robert Guiscard, who had died at the nearby beach of Porto Atheras.

On nautical charts of the Venetians who ruled Kefalonia long time, the place as Porto di Custodi ( port monitor), Petiglia, Veneti Victi, Panormos and Dulichio or in Greek Δολίχιον ( Dolichion ) is called. It is assumed that since the 13th century, the name Fiskardo in different variants was used among the locals ( Guisgardo, Pescarda, Viscardo Piscardo and others).

Around 1700 developed the site to the port of Erissos Peninsula and to Warenumschlageplatz to Ithaca. From Fiskardo originates born in the Chinese city of Harbin poet Nikos Kavvadias.

Since the 1960s, the port was the pedestrian zone; traditional kafeneions and pubs for fishermen and sailors have been converted into restaurants. The best known example is that of the cook Tassia, the goal for the restaurant of their parents to the meeting place for gourmets. Here were already celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Madonna and Nicolas Cage as a guest.

Recent Developments

The last few years there have been many complaints about high prices, (which was not least due to the high demand and short season ). Guest preferred other targets on Cephalonia, including the harbor of Assos. Today, the prices of the Local are moderate, generally trying to counteract a further commercialization of the place, so no new buildings to be approved and the site remains closed to motorized traffic.

Due to the high prices of real estate, the previous inhabitants of Fiskardo moved to the nearby towns and were able to use or sell their existing homes commercial, only a few dozen are permanently residing here yet. With the local government reform in 1997 Fiskardo was merged with the other towns in the north of the island back to a city and also benefits from the increase in population in Kefalonia.
