Fiskars, Finland

Fiskars (Finnish Fiskari ) is a village in the municipality Raseborg ( Raasepori ) in southern Finland. The place is known for the company Fiskars. Fiskars 2011 had 454 inhabitants.

Fiskars village arose from a ironworks founded by Dutchman Peter Thorwöste 1649. Located on the River Fiskars å ( Fiskarinjoki ) a small, industrially defined settlement developed over time. In recent history, the place turned increasingly into a magnet for artists and designers

By 2009, Fiskars belonged to the municipality of Pojo ( Pohja ). Pojo was combined with the cities Ekenäs and Karis to the city Raseborg 2009.

Others

The ski jumper Yrjö Kivivirta and plant ecologists and geographer Ragnar Hult were born in Fiskars. In 1966, the first World Orienteering Championships were held in Fiskars.
