FIVB Volleyball World Championship

The Volleyball World Championships are organized by the world - FIVB tournaments to determine the world champion of women and men.

Rules

The regulations of the Volleyball World Championship was adapted several times to the respective number of participants. The current version contains the following rules.

  • 24 teams take part in the tournament.
  • The qualification will take approximately two years.
  • Hosts and defending champions qualify automatically.
  • The number of participants in a continental association is determined by the FIVB. Europe usually has the most, Africa and South America, the least starting places.
  • In order to qualify for the World Cup, a team must survive several tournaments depending on their position in the world ranking of FIVB. The lowest-ranked teams play up to three rounds.
  • The competition is divided into at least two phases: a preliminary round and a final round. Depending on the number of participants is an additional second round necessary.
  • In the preliminary round, the teams will be divided into groups. Each participant plays once against each group opponent.
  • After completion of the preliminary round the best teams in each group qualify for the next round. The number depends on the number of participants and the mode used.
  • The FIVB has used different formats for the final round. Nowadays, it is widely agreed that at least the semi-finals and finals must be played in the Olympic format.
  • The quarter-finals can be played in groups or in direct duels. In the latter case, additional rounds may be needed to reduce the number of participants to eight.
  • At the tournament there are strict restrictions. Only 14 players are allowed and even Nachnominierungen are not allowed in the event of a breach.

History

The history of the World Cup goes back to the beginnings of volleyball as a professional sport at a high level. One of the first concrete action of the FIVB after its foundation in 1947 was the introduction of an international tournament with teams from more than one continent. 1949 was the first World Cup of the men held in Prague. This tournament was limited to Europe. Three years later there were 1952 the first competition for the women. The tournaments were now held every four years. 1962, there was an interruption of the four -year cycle, because volleyball was included in the program of the Olympic Games in 1964 and temporal overlap of the two main events should be avoided in this sport. Meanwhile played with even teams from Asia and America. Then in 1970 came yet added the Africans, so the original goal, members of all confederations at the World Cup to have been reached.

By 1974, the respective host country organized the World Championships for both the men and the women. An exception, there were only 1966/1967, when the tournaments were held in different years. Since then, there is this practice only in exceptional cases, namely 1998 and 2006, respectively in Japan.

The number of participants has changed repeatedly over the years. Parallel to the popularity of volleyball, the number rose to 20 teams in the 1970s and parts of the 1980s. In the 1990s, it reduced the Participants' field to 16 teams. Since 2002, 24 teams take part in the World Cup. The World Cup is not only the oldest but also the most important event of the FIVB. In the prestige it is surpassed only by the Olympic Games.

The World Cup shows just how much volleyball was initially dominated by European teams.

The Soviet Union won the first two tournaments. 1956 was the two-time finalist from Czechoslovakia successfully. In the next two World Cups, the USSR dominated again on the CSSR before the competitor in 1966 for the second time secured the win.

In 1970 the GDR in the final against Bulgaria their single title. Poland defeated in 1974 the large eastern neighbor, but then won the Soviet Union for the third time two tournaments in a row.

After the Olympic boycotts of 1980 and 1984 came 1986 on the first confrontation of the Eastern superpower with the emerging United States. Just as in the following Summer Games in Seoul, the Americans won under the leadership of Charles Kiraly and Steve Timmons.

In the 1990s, dominated the Italians, all three tournaments this decade (1990, 1994, 1998 ) chose for themselves. Outstanding players were going Lorenzo Bernardi and Andrea Giani. In 2002, she had to admit defeat but the Brazilians to Nalbert. The South Americans triumphed in Argentina, where they had stood in 1982 already in the final. In the 2006 World Cup in Japan, Brazil was able to defend the title.

In the previous 17 World Championships won 13 times European teams, while only four titles went to the team from the American continent (USA and Brazil).

In the women so far only five teams were entered in the winners' lists. The Soviet Union / Russia, Japan, China and Cuba dominated the competition before was able to prevail for the first time Italy 2002. 2006 and 2010, won the Russian women, just under the final against Brazil.

The women from the Soviet Union won the first three tournaments. Four years later they were again in the final but had to beat the Soviet Union in its last participation give.

After the surprise victory of 1978 Cuba adopted an aggressive style of play, with which they dominated the 1990s. Led by Regla Torres, Mireya Luis and Regla Bell, they won the World Cup in 1994 and 1998. Process, they left the established competitors and newcomers from Brazil behind.
