Megillot ( pl. מְגִלָּה to Hebrew Megillah, " scroll ", " book" ) in Judaism is the name given to five fonts from the Tanakh. They belong to the third part of the Hebrew Bible, the Ketubim ( " writings "). The five books of Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations and esters are the five most important festivals of Shavuot, Passover, Sukkot, Tisha Beav and Purim assigned and therefore also referred to as " hard rolls ".

Position in the Bible

The compilation of Megillot as the five hard rolls is only since the 6th century. occupied. At least since the 12th century. corresponds to the sequence and the sequence of the Jewish festivals in Ordinary Time. In Talmudic times (BBB 14b) the books were arranged even after the age of the events described in them in the series of Ketubim: Rut - Psalms Job Proverbs - Ecclesiastes - Song of Songs Lamentations -Daniel - ester Ezra Chronicle. According to the Codex Leningradensis (1008 AD) as the oldest complete Masoretic Bible manuscript to find the Megillot together behind the books Chronicles Psalms Job Spells and before the Book of Daniel.

Although the Christian Old Testament knows all five fonts, but does not associate them together. The order is based on the contents of books and events described in them: Ruth ( by judges) and esters ( after Ezra and Judit ) are assigned to the history books as Ecclesiastes and Song count (after proverbs) to the textbooks. Lamentations is readjusted among the prophets the book of Jeremiah, which is traditionally regarded as its author. The Old Testament follows this sequence largely the Septuagint.
