Five Times Five

Five Times Five is an American short film from the year 1939. The documentary was produced by Frederic Ullman Jr. under the direction of Frank P. Donovan at RKO Radio Pictures in black and white. The U.S. premiere took place on 19 July 1939.

Action

The film shows the fifth birthday of the Dionne quintuplets, Annette, Cecile, Emilie, Marie and Yvonne Dionne. It is shown a private birthday party in the garden. In addition to the five girls her mentor Allan Roy Dafoe, the journalist and broadcaster Alexander Woollcott, a priest, two nurses and the cameraman Harry W. Smith are present.

Background

The Dionne Quintuplets were the first known surviving quintuplets. The identical girls were born on 28 May 1934 in Ontario, Canada. In the home birth without electricity or running water Allan Roy Dafoe the country doctor and two midwives were present. Her birth was at the time a sensation and brought them a lot of popularity. 1935 parents custody has been withdrawn and awarded Dafoe. This began the quintuplets in numerous advertising and film appearances to market.
