Fjallsárlón

Fjallsárlón is a glacial lake at the southern end of the Icelandic glacier Vatnajökull.

It is located about 25 km from the Skaftafell National Park and near the more famous lake Jökulsárlón on the Breiðamerkulsander in the community Hornafjörður.

With the Breiðárlón it is connected by the river Breiðá. Above the lake is the Hvannadalshnúkur, also Öræfajökull. From this volcano glacier tongue Fjallsjökull reaches down to the lake, in which she calves. The icebergs have here, however, smaller proportions than in Jökulsárlón.

At its pretty quiet shores nest in June, the great skuas, in which hikers should beware.
