Flag of Abkhazia
The flag was officially adopted in Abkhazia 's unilateral declaration of independence on 23 July 1992. It was designed in 1991 by V. Gamgia.
Description and significance
Horizontal there are four green and three white stripes with each other. In the upper left corner there is a red canton with a white hand to the above are arranged in a semicircle around seven white, five-pointed stars. The stars, all with a tip up.
Model of the hand symbol on a red background is a historical flag of Sebastopol, now the capital Sukhumi. The open hand is now available for the Abkhaz nation. The seven stars represent the seven regions of the country: Sadzen, Bzyp, Gumaa, Abzhywa, Samurzaqan, Dal- Tsabal and Pskhuy - Aibga. The Seven applies in Abkhazia as a sacred number. Therefore, seven strips, the alternation between green and white stands for the tolerance between Islam and Christianity.
History
The flag of Sebastopol is listed in a book published in 1350.
Even during the Soviet era had its own flag Abkhazia from 1925. Although it is often reported by a flag in the early 1920s, but the images of this flag have various errors, so it is likely to be an error message. The same applies to a flag that should have existed from 1930 to 1931. Between 1925 and 1931 a flag was used by the Soviet model: red with hammer, sickle and star and the Cyrillic letters for CCPA Soviet Socialist Republic of Abkhazia. Maybe a flag was used from 1926 with the Latin abbreviation SSRA, because from this point, the Latin alphabet was used. About the correct arrangement there are different information.
1931 Abkhazia was an ASSR within Georgia. In Article 84 of the Constitution of 1935, the Cyrillic abbreviation ACCPA ( ASSRA ) is used in the flag of the ASSR. Evidence about the appearance of the flag before missing. The Constitution of October 2, 1937 pretended that red flag, only the name of the Georgian SSR was performed in the languages Georgian ( Georgian script), Abkhaz ( Latin ) and Russian ( Cyrillic). In 1938 the Georgian script was used for Abkhazian. Accordingly, the flag changed. This was maintained until 1951. From 1951 to 1978, the flag of the Georgian SSR was used. At the June 6, 1978 ( Article 160 ), the Cyrillic lettering Abkhazian ASSR inserted into the Abkhaz Constitution. Abkhazian it was not abbreviated, as partially reported. In 1989, one a red flag with a golden sun and the designation SSR Abkhazia. All flags of the Soviet era led to the back neither a caption nor hammer, sickle and star.
