Flag of Cambodia

The current flag of Cambodia was first introduced on 29 October 1948 but replaced in October 1970 by another. On September 24, 1993, the old design was again assumed by the end of the reign of the Khmer Rouge and civil war.

Description

Basis of the flag, three horizontal stripes in blue, red and blue. The red stripes is twice as wide as a blue stripe. In the center it shows in white Angkor Wat, the most important temple complex of Cambodia, about 240 kilometers north of Phnom Penh, near Siem Reap. As a national symbol we find the temple on almost all national flags in the history of Cambodia.

Blue stands for the monarchy, red for the nation and white for religion, Buddhism.

History

The current flag of Cambodia is based on a design from the mid 19th century. In the previous design under the Khmer Rouge, the blue stripes were removed; the flag of " Democratic Kampuchea " was Angkor Wat as a golden silhouette on a red background only.

After the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979 by Vietnamese troops, the flag showed a silhouette with five towers. While the UN administration in Cambodia between 1991 and 1993 an ajar at the UN flag sky-blue flag was shown with a white silhouette of the territory and the country's name on it.
