After the declaration of independence in El Salvador on March 5, 1824, the state entered immediately in the Central American Confederation founded in 1823 and used accordingly, the flag of that confederation. Even after disintegration of the same in February 1839 El Salvador was still holding firmly to the unit long thoughts. This was also reflected in the continuation of the blue-white- blue flag until 1865, in which only the coat of arms was modified slightly in 1841.

The final rejection of the idea of Union in 1859 manifested itself on 28 April 1865 a radical change in the flag design. It was based heavily on the flag of the United States and chose a star - and - stripe pattern with 5 blue and 4 white stripes and a red square box that contained 9 white, five - pointed stars. The number nine points to the nine provinces of El Salvador. As well as common in the U.S. - - With an increasing number of provinces, the number of stars has been increased. So you already hoisted in June 1865 a flag with 11 stars, in 1869 with a 12 and in 1873 a 13-star. Although the 14th province was added only in 1877, 1875 flags were already shown with 14 stars in years, as documented contemporary illustrations.

As a member of the El Salvador founded in 1895 Central American United Republic ( República Mayor de Centro América ) was hoisted on to a November 2, 1898 newly created flag, which was again blue-white- blue with the traditional colors. In the center was the emblem of the " Great Republic " which also included the States of Nicaragua and Honduras. Already on November 30, 1898 the confederation fell apart and returned to El Salvador Flag of 1875. This was finally abolished on September 15, 1912 under the presidency of Manuel Enrique Araujo by blue-white- blue returned to the old Union flag.
