Folklore tells of the three colors following meaning: red represents all the blood, which the Hungarians have lost many battles for freedom and independence. White stands for purity and cleanliness of the country. These two were the colors of the flag of the first Hungarians, who had settled in the Carpathian Basin - " Árpád - stripes".
