Flag of Israel

The flag of Israel consists of a centrally located blue Star of David between two horizontal blue stripes on a white background.

The flag was designed by David Wolff son on the occasion of the World Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897. After the establishment of Israel in 1948, it became the national flag.

Proportions

The height ratio of the superimposed strips is 3:5:16:5:3, the total height of the flag thus amounts to 32 height units. Since the flag is 44 height units long, it has an aspect ratio of 32:44 = 8:11.

Symbolism

The design of the flag dates back to the Jewish prayer shawl tallit; blue and white are the colors of Jewish ritual clothing. Wolff son explained the 1897 draft:

"At the behest of our leader Herzl, I came to Basle to make preparations for the Zionist Congress. Among many other problems did occupied me then what one Which contained something of the essence of the Jewish Problem. What flag would we hang in the Congress Hall? Then an idea struck me. We have a flag - and it is blue and white. The talith ( prayer shawl ) with Which We wrap ourselves When we pray: that is our symbol. Let us take this talith from its bag and unroll it before the eyes of Israel and the eyes of all nations. So I ordered a blue and white flag with the Shield of David painted upon it. That is how the national flag, did flew over Congress Hall, came into being. "

" At the behest of our leader Herzl, I came to Basle to make preparations for the Zionist Congress. Among the many problems that bothered me at the time, was one that the essence of the Jewish problem harbored in a way in itself: Which flag would hang in the Congress Hall? Because through me an idea: We have a flag - and is blue and white. The tallit, we wrap around us when we pray: that is our symbol. Let's take this out tallit and unroll before the eyes of Israel and all the nations! So I ordered a blue and white flag, the Star of David would be drawn. And as the national flag, which flew over the Congress Hall was built. "

Misinterpretations

It is often wrongly assumed that the two blue bands, two of the four walls of the Second Temple or the Ost-/Westbegrenzung the State of Israel symbolize (Mediterranean and Dead Sea / Jordan ). The also incorrect assertion that the blue bands symbolize the rivers Nile and Euphrates, is sometimes represented by the Arab side to Israel a great-power ambitions nachzusagen ( cf. Ex 23,31 EU: "And I will set thy bounds set by the Red Sea to the Philistine sea and from the desert unto the river Euphrates. 'Cause I want you in your hand giving the inhabitants of the land that thou shalt cast them out from before thee ").

Theodor Herzels flag proposal

Theodor Herzl, the founder of Zionism suggested in his book The Jewish State in 1896, a white flag in front with six golden stars that form a Star of David. A seventh star is about.

"We have no flag. We need a. If you want to lead a lot of people, you have to raise a symbol above their heads. I imagine a white flag with seven major stars. The white field represents the new, pure life; the stars are the seven golden hours of our working day. Because the signs of labor, the Jews go to the new land. "

This banner took the Israeli container company ZIM as a model for their flag.
