Flag of Jerusalem
The flag of Jerusalem consists of the skeleton of the flag of Israel and the inserted in the middle coat of arms of the city of Jerusalem. In the Six-Day War in 1967, conquered by the Israeli army Jerusalem was discussed long as the coat of arms or the flag have to look.
The Lion
It was finally decided that the Star of David from Israel flag the "Lion of Judah " ( Bible, King James Version: 1. Gen. 49.9 ) must yield. Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob is regarded as the progenitor of the biblical David, on the latter is the Star of David ( מגן דוד - Magen David ) back. The symbolized wall in the background represents the Wailing Wall, the color yellow stands for the Jerusalem Meleke limestone. The fact that the lion stands in front of the Western Wall, may mean that the Lion of Judah representative of Judaism is to eventually gain the victory over Jerusalem. The laurel branches speak for the left and right of this meaning of the lion. In the New Testament the Lion of Judah ( Rev 5.5 see. ) Stands for Jesus Christ. This is an unwanted by the Israeli government Parallel. For evangelical Christian circles this parallel is no coincidence: So shall once again return to earth and put his foot on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem Jesus Christ. Again, the laurel branches are seen as a symbol of victory.
The two bands
There are different interpretations of the two blue bands: First, they can be understood religiously, then they represent one of the Jewish prayer garments, the tallit ( prayer shawl ), which strips this scarf consist however of more than two and are usually not as symmetrical. Second, one can understand the tapes as two of the walls of the Second Temple. It is sometimes claimed that they refer geographically limiting the Israel water, so either the Old Testament idea of a Greater Israel between the Euphrates and the Nile give expression (Mo 23.31: "And I will set thy bounds set by the Red Sea to the Philistine sea and from the desert unto the river Euphrates. 'Cause I want you in your hand giving the inhabitants of the land that thou shalt cast them out from before thee " ), or just to the east-west boundary of the land of Israel between the Mediterranean and Totem indicate sea. In fact, however, they were simply taken over from the Israeli national flag, in which they go back to the Jewish prayer clothes.

The lettering ירושלים on the coat of arms is the Hebrew name of Jerusalem ( Yeruschala'im ).
Political background / explosiveness
The relationship with the national flag of Israel is intended to justify the claim of the Israeli government to the entire city of Jerusalem as the eternal capital. The flag is not recognized by the Palestinian government, since these do not accept the membership of East Jerusalem to Israel.
