Flag of Kiribati

The flag of Kiribati consists of two color-separated areas. The upper half is red. There is a yellow frigate bird flying ( Fregata minor, in Gilbertese: te eitei ) as a symbol of strength and freedom on a rising yellow sun ( in Gilbertese: otintai ) are shown. Both are provided with contour lines and internal details. On the lower half of switch three blue and three white wavy lines. The white wavy lines represent the three island groups Gilbert Islands, Phoenix Islands and the Line Islands represents the seventeen rays of the sun symbolize the 16 islands of the Gilberts and Banaba.

The flag was officially adopted on 12 July 1979. It was designed in 1932 by the design of Arthur Grimble for the coat of arms in the Blue Ensign of the Gilbert and Elliceinseln, which was officially used since 1937.
