Flag of Kurdistan

The Kurds use different flags. Best known is the flag that is used by the regional government of the Kurds in Iraq. It is the only flag of a Kurdish territorial entity. The flag is banned in Iran, Turkey and Syria, where there are also significant Kurdish populations.

Meaning of Flag

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes in red, white and green. Red stands for the blood that flowed in the defense of Kurdistan, White stands for peace and green for nature and the mountains in the regions inhabited by Kurds regions. In the center of the flag is a golden sun with 21 rays. The sun is an old Kurdish symbol, more a symbol of the Yazidis. The 21 is also often associated with the 21 March, the Newroz, in conjunction. We should also mention that the number 21 is a lucky number in Jesidentum.

History

The flag of Kurdistan was the first time in the 20s of the 20th century by the organization Xoybûn ( Khoyboon ) used the attempts by the Kurds to gain their independence from the Ottoman Empire during. An earlier version was in the Republic of Ararat in Turkey during the period 1927-1931 and which was supported by the Soviet Union, the short-lived Republic of Mahabad used. The flag is now used by all major Kurdish parties, whether they are for Kurdish independence or not.

In the national flag of Iraq 1959-1963, the Kurds were represented symbolically by the yellow sun in the center. But already in the next version of the yellow of the Kurds from the flag disappeared. The proposal for the Iraqi national flag of 2004 was again a yellow stripe for the Kurds, but do not put the proposal through. Nor diverse proposals of 2008.

Flag of the Kurdish Parliament in Exile

On 12 April 1995 the first time entered the Kurdish Parliament in exile in The Hague in the Netherlands. It uses as a symbol of a tricolor, the colors should stand for the three major Kurdish parties: green for the PUK, yellow for the PDK and red for the PKK. The Parliament was dominated by the PKK; PUK and PDK refused a staff in the Parliament, but the flag was used on. The flag is banned in Turkey.

Historical flags

A similar version of the flag of the Autonomous Region in Iraq was used in the Republics of Ararat and Mahabad. In addition there was the flag of the Kingdom of Kurdistan (1922-1924), which had been proclaimed by Sheikh Mahmud Berzanci in northern Iraq.

Religious flags

The flag is a horizontal tricolor Yazidi in the traditional colors of the Yazidi green, red and yellow. After Yezidi details, the colors have been used for 3000 years. Green stands for nature and happiness, red for the blood of the fallen Yazidis and yellow for the sun's rays when the sun brightens the day. At the red Wednesday, a Yezidi festival, the faithful carry the three colors. The colors can also be found in the religious songs of the Yazidi again.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK ) used various flags. Her symbols are banned in Germany and other countries, as the PKK has been classified as a terrorist organization. This does not apply to the symbols of the PJAK and PÇDK.
