History

The national flag has undergone several changes since its independence on 4 October 1966. The first flag was presented on September 30, 1966, took the colors of the Basotho National Party and showed a Mokorotlo. The width of the strips had a ratio of 1:1:8. After a military coup, which replaced the ruling Basotho National Party, a new flag was introduced on 17 January 1987. The light brown emblem showed a traditional Sotho sign in front of weapons from the 19th century, an assegai spear and a Kierrie - mace.
