Flag of Mali

The current flag of Mali was officially launched on 1 March 1961.

Description and significance

The flag of Mali is based on the French tricolor, and is reminiscent of the French colonial period. Mali has chosen for its national flag, like many other African countries, the pan-African colors so called, who were also the colors of the African Democratic party Rassemblement ( RDA) before. You mean the following:

  • Green ( PMS 355 ) represents the nature of the country.
  • Yellow ( PMS 109) stands for mineral wealth and purity.
  • Red ( PMS 032) stands for the blood that was shed in the struggle for independence.

History

The original flag of Mali was adopted on April 4, 1959, and it was in the middle of a black human figure, known as the Kanaga symbol, which was also found in the flag of the French Sudan. It is believed that this figure was added by the initiative of Leopold Sedar Senghor, who later became president of Senegal. The symbol was, after elimination of Senegal from the Mali Federation, abolished under pressure from the Muslim part of the population who endorsed no representation of people because of their faith.

Ghanaian flag was the template for the Ghana -Guinea Union ( Union of African States) from November 28, 1958. It differed from the Ghanaian flag, except that it contained two stars. After the accession of Mali in April 1961 the Union was added a third star, for more ( never was ) accessions, the number of stars should be increased accordingly. 1962 ended the project.
