Flag of Moldova

The flag of Moldova was first established by a law of 12 May 1990 mentioned again on 27 August 1991. Before the independence of the country it is in the Constitution of 29 July 1994.

Description

The flag is a tricolor flag in the colors blue, yellow and red (from left to right). The aspect ratio of height to width is 1:2. In the middle of the flag, the coat of arms of Moldova, an eagle holding a shield with the picture of a bull is. The shield has a historical origin and refers to the bull on the former Principality of Moldavia and the eagle on Romania. Model for the color choice was the flag of Romania. The aspect ratio follows Soviet tradition.

History

1944-1952

Following annexation by the Soviet Union during the Second World War, Moldova received in 1944 a flag with the Cyrillic letters РССМ ( RSSM for Република Советикэ Сочиалистэ Молдовеняскэ; Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic ) in serif font on a red background. The crossed with a hammer sickle symbolized the union as part of the Soviet Union.

1952-1990
