Flag of Montreal

The flag was first hoisted in Montreal in May 1939. It shows the basic heraldic symbols of the Montreal emblem: a red cross on a white field with symmetrical floral four icons in the corners. The flag has an aspect ratio of 1:2.

The blue fleur-de- lys of the Bourbons is for the French, the first settlers of the city, and French-Canadians. The red rose of the house of Lancaster symbolizes the English, the purple thistle the Scottish section of the population. The green shamrock, a three-leafed shamrock, is the symbol of the Irish section of the population.

A similar symbolism has the coat of arms of Canada; here these four floral symbols are used.
