Flag of Mozambique

The flag of Mozambique based on the old flag of freedom movement FRELIMO ( Frente de Libertação de Moçambique ). This in turn has been inspired by the colors of the South African liberation movement the ANC. These have the following meaning:

  • Green stands for agriculture
  • Black symbolizes the dark continent
  • Yellow stands for the mineral wealth of the country
  • White is representative for Justice and Peace
  • Red recalls the revolutionary struggle against colonialism

The Kalashnikov bayonet in the emblem stands for defense and vigilance. Hoe for farmers and their products and by the book for the formation The asterisk stands for the spirit of internationalism, in which finds the country.

The flag was officially adopted on 1 May 1983 and replaced the previous version, which used the same colors and similar symbols and was introduced in 1975.

The often combined with black and / or white colors red, yellow and green are the pan-African colors that are found on many African flags.

History

During the colonial period, the Portuguese flag was used in the then Portuguese East Africa. 1967 there was a proposal for the Colonies to the flag of Portugal to attach the respective arms of the colony.

During the preparations for the independence FRELIMO flag was placed alongside the Portuguese flag. With release into the independence, a new flag was adopted. 1982 changed to the coat of arms of Mozambique since 1983 but already a new flag was introduced, the probability is high that the flag was not changed by then. In April 1983, we reintroduced the FRELIMO flag, a simplified form of the national emblem, as it was already in the triangle to see the flag from 1975, carried on a star, shortly after the badge was further simplified to the current version.
