The FLNKS is a party which seeks the independence of New Caledonia. This flag dispute led to political instability.

On July 13, 2010 formulated the regional parliament, called the Congress of New Caledonia that besides the French tricolor in future also the FLNKS Flag Official Flag of New Caledonia should be. Both flags were first set on July 17 together during a visit by French Prime Minister François Fillon before the High Commission, despite the legal dubiousness. The Congress of New Caledonia is authorized by Article 5 of the Institutional Act ( loi organique ) No 99-209 of 19 March 1999 to elect a flag for New Caledonia, but this has not yet done so.

To the Mayor offices of municipalities with majority FLNKS - blowing has long been the party flag, often in place of the flag of the Republic, and not in addition.
