Flag of Palau

The flag of Palau shows a golden full moon on light blue cloth.

Description and significance

The diameter of the disc is three -fifths of the flag width. The sky-blue cloth borrowed from the flag of Micronesia. The blue color represents the area surrounding the islands of the Pacific Ocean. The yellow disc represents the full moon over Betau.

The moon plays an important role in the time of harvest, the natural cycle and the beginning of certain events in the tradition of Palau. It also symbolizes the emergence of the country as a sovereign independent nation. The blue ocean is the never ending supply of the island with food. At the same time it symbolizes the stability and survival of Palau under different dominations through the years to be finally united with the full moon.

At full moon the important activities take place, be it the construction of boats, cutting trees, fishing and traditional festivals.

History

In 1979 a Commission announced a competition for the creation of a national flag. In the red-blue split cloth The Siege design showed a " Azde ", surrounded by sixteen white stars. But was adopted, the draft second-placed local Blue Skebong.

The flag was introduced by law in Parliament Olbiil Era Kelulau, which was adopted on 18 September 1980 and entered into force on 22 October 1980.
