Flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis

The flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis was officially launched on September 19, 1983.

Importance

The two stars are not as often cited for the two islands, but of hope and freedom.

History

On February 27, 1967 St. Christopher -Nevis - Anguilla received full internal autonomy and adopted its own flag to: A vertical tricolor of green, yellow and blue with a black palm in yellow stripes. The colors stand for the plant world, the tropical sun and the water of the Caribbean. The roots of the palm express growth, the three palm fronds represent the three islands that sprung from a common trunk. Anguilla parted already on May 30, 1967 from the alliance, the flag remained valid for St. Christopher and Nevis.

The current national flag of the country which now bear the name of St. Kitts and Nevis, was designed by Edrice Lewis Viechweg who taught at the Irish Town Primary School in Basse Terre. She now lives in Connecticut / USA. She won a national competition as one of 258 entries.

Nevis uses its own yellow flag with a triangle and the national flag in the canton.
