Flag of Singapore

The flag of Singapore was first officially hoisted on 3 December 1959.

Description and significance

The National Flag consists of two equal horizontal stripes: red above and white below. The color red symbolizes universal brotherhood and equality of man, white purity and virtue.

In the upper left corner of a white crescent is shown, along with five white stars that form a circle. The crescent moon represents a young and rising nation, the five stars for Singapore's ideals. Democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality

In the design of the flag had to be taken in view of the different ethnic groups. Red was chosen for the Chinese population, as this is a traditional lucky color in Chinese culture. In addition, Red is in the Malay understanding of courage. White was chosen as the color of purity in the Malay culture. As an example of the People's Republic of China stars were called to the flag of the Chinese population. The Malays demanded that the crescent moon is an expression of Islam on the flag into place. As a compromise the government to represent five stars and a crescent moon on the flag decided - in contrast to the flags of Muslim countries in which the crescent moon with a star is common.

History

For more than 140 years ( 1819-1959 ) of the Union Jack was a part of Singapore's colonial flag of Great Britain. As of 1826, Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements. Her symbol was three crowns, which were available for the three main settlements of the colony. The design has been changed several times, from 1874, a Blue Ensign with the symbol of the colony on a white disk. 1946 Singapore received its own flag with only one crown. On 3 December 1959, the new national flag by the head of state ( " Yang di - Pertuan Negara " ) was first hoisted. At that time, Singapore was not independent, but it received broad autonomy rights of the British government. The design of the flag originated by the then Deputy Prime Minister Dr Toh Chin Chye.

In 1963, Singapore in the Federation of Malaya, from hence arose the state Malaysia. In its flag still stands each a ray of sunshine and a strip for Singapore, even though Singapore left the federation in 1965 again.

More flags of Singapore

The maritime flags of Singapore have a completely different design, because otherwise there would be a likelihood of confusion with the flag of neighboring Indonesia. The merchant flag on a red background shows a white circle in the center with the Emblen of the country, which lies half- moon with five white stars above. The service flag at sea into the lower part of flight on a dark blue background a red and white compass rose, while again the white crescent and five stars will be shown as a jack at red ground. The Seekriegsflagge shows in the lower part of a flight red wind rose with thin white lines and has a white background. It is used since 5 May 1967. Previously they used the dark blue official flag at sea. The aspect ratio of all maritime flags is 1:2.

The armed forces of Singapore's use as a war flag, the red and white national flag with the seal of the armed forces in the army and the emblems of Navy or Air Force for the other two branches of the armed forces in the lower part of flight. The so-called State Colours are used only on ceremonial occasions, such as the national holiday or a visit to the President. While the navy also the Seekriegsflagge used as a sign of the armed force ashore in the aspect ratio 2:3, Army and Air Force have their own flags as a symbol of the armed force for everyday use, not as a state symbol. The flag of the Air Force is light blue with the seal of the Air Force in the lower part of flight and the red Gösch with crescent moon and stars. It is only with the introduction of the new Flugzeugkokarde in this form in use. The first flag of the Air Force in 1968 showed the then cockade (red dot in white circle in a red circle) in the center of the flight part. Since the cockade corresponded to those of Peru and Turkey, a new 1973 was introduced with a red and white yin- yang symbol. Since 1990, the lion's head is used today. The flag of the army in contrast, shows the emblem of the Army and is in the fundamental yellow.
