Flag of Sudan

The flag of Sudan was designed by Abdurrahman Ahmad Aljali, a graduate of the art school.

Description and significance

The reference to the Arab Liberation flag is documented by the pan-Arab colors.

  • Green stands for Islam, the dynasty of the Fatimids and for welfare and prosperity of the state.
  • Red is the color of revolution, socialism and progress and represents the sacrifices that cost the struggle for the nation state.
  • White symbolizes peace, light and optimism and is reminiscent of the white flag revolution of 1924, the League of the White Flag
  • Black has the membership of the state to the " black continent " down ( The Arabic word "Sudan" means black ' ). Moreover, it was black the main color of the flag of Muhammad Ahmad, a Sudanese national leader from the 19th century who claimed himself as Mahdi.

The tip of the green triangle extends to one-third of the flag length in the white stripes.

History

To introduce the flag occurred in connection with the seizure of power by the Sudanese Socialist Union Jafar Muhammad an- Nimeiry in 1969. It was first officially hoisted on 20 May 1970. The previous flag was used since the independence of Sudan in 1956.
