Flag of Suriname

The flag of Suriname was introduced on 25 November 1975.

Description and significance

The national flag consists of five horizontal stripes. From top to bottom: green ( double width ), white, red ( quadruple width), white, green ( double width ). In the center of the flag, a yellow, five-pointed star is shown. Red symbolizes the progress and the struggle for a better life. White is the symbol for freedom and justice. The color green represents the fertility of the land and the star symbolizes the golden future.

History

After the statute was passed for more independence of Suriname within the Kingdom of the Netherlands into force in December 1954, there was a need for their own national symbols. Prime Minister Emanuel issued in 1958 a contract to draft their own flag. In the end, put the idea and the design of Noni Lichtveld to represent the colors of the five different population groups in the form of stars and to connect by an ellipse through. The color black represented the group of African, brown the groups Hindustani and Javanese, Chinese yellow, red and white native European origin. The white background to symbolize the peaceful coexistence of various ethnic groups. On December 8, 1959 this design was adopted by the Parliament and introduced on 15 December, the king Reichstag along with the national anthem " God zij met ons Suriname " in public.
