Description and significance

The national flag shows five horizontal stripes in red-white- blue-white- red, with the blue midfield is twice as wide as the other four strips. The strips are nine times as long as one of the narrow strip is wide.

Red stands for the nation, white for religion, and blue for the monarchy.

The flag is similar in design and color selection of the flag of Costa Rica, which was adopted eleven years before the flag of Thailand. The decisive difference is the distribution of the red and blue stripes, which is in Costa Rica reversed from the Thai flag. In addition, both flags have a different aspect ratio.

History

The first flag of Siam, which consisted only of a red surface, under King Narai (1656-1688) has been introduced. Marine flags were later with various symbols on the red background in use, such as a white chakra ( the coat of arms of Lord Vishnu, which is also the symbol of the House of Chakri represented ) or a white elephant in the middle of the chakra.

The first official flag was introduced in 1855 by King Mongkut (Rama IV ) and showed a white elephant ( a royal symbol ) on red ground, as the pure red flag had too little individual character of international relations.

In 1916 the flag was changed and took its present stripe design, the mean color, however, was kept in the same shade of red as the outer strips. According to one tradition to King Vajiravudh (Rama VI. ) The previous flag are seen during a flood, as they hung on the head. To prevent this, he designed a new flag, which had a symmetrical design. In 1917, the average color was changed to a dark blue, the auspicious color of the Saturdays in the Thai astrology, the day was born to the king Vajiravudh. According to other sources, the blue color to have been chosen to honor the allies in World War I (France, Great Britain, Russia, USA), whose flags have also red-white- blue.
