Flag of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations

The current flag of ASEAN was introduced in July 1997.

It consists of ten stylized yellow Reisrispen in a red, white rimmed circle on a blue background. The ten panicles symbolize the ten members of ASEAN.

Symbolism

The colors blue, red, white and yellow are the main colors of the flags of all ASEAN countries and have the following symbols:

  • Blue: Peace and Security
  • Red: courage and energy
  • White: Purity
  • Yellow: wealth

The ten stems stand for the hope of the ASEAN founders on an alliance of the ten founding countries together in friendship and solidarity.

The circle symbolizes the unity of the ASEAN countries.

Old flag

The previous flag was similar to the present. She had six brown panicles, five for the founding states and one for Brunei and under the Reisrispen was asean. The background was white instead of blue, the circle had a turquoise border and filled light yellow.
