Flag of the Azores

The flag of the Azores based on the old Portuguese national flag at sea, which had 1830-1910 validity. The flag was officially adopted on 10 April 1979 with the Legislative Order n ° 4/79/A. For the first time it was set on 12 April 1979.

Description and significance

The aspect ratio of the flag is 2:3. It is blue to two-fifths of the leech, the flight portion, which accounts for three-fifths, is white. The Azores blue, a very dark blue (B ), is significantly darker than the blue of her role model. The coat of arms of Portugal is located in the naval jack. It symbolizes the political affiliation of the Islands to Portugal. There is a golden hawk, from its Portuguese name Açor, the name of the islands derives At the parting line of colors. However, this is due to an error. The sailors who gave their name to the islands, had found common buzzards (Buteo buteo) on the islands. Hawks do not occur in the Azores. About the hawk form nine golden stars form a bow. They stand for the nine main islands of the archipelago: Corvo, Flores, Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Terceira, Santa Maria and São Miguel.

History

After the separation of Portugal and Brazil in 1822, the kings of Portugal continued the white Union Flag with the combined arms of the two areas. During the Miguelistenkrieges a government in exile was established in the Azores by the Liberals. She used a blue and white flag with the state coat of arms in Modern French form and a crown in the center, which was first set on the island of Terceira. With King Michael I. transition into exile in 1834, the blue and white flag became the new flag of Portugal. At sea, the blue part took only a third of the flag to the country, the two parts of the flag were the same size.

Already in October 1897 called for locals stronger management autonomy of Portugal and placed a blue and white flag with a hawk and nine stars. The Frente de Libertação dos Açores (FLA ) ( Liberation Front of the Azores ), which called for the autonomy of the archipelago 1974-1976, also used different versions of this flag. In the example shown here corresponds to the color scheme, however, neither a hawk nor a buzzard. This could be due to bad templates, but also that an American bald eagle served as a model for the bird. The FLA worked closely with the American CIA.

More flags of the Azores

The Regional President of the Azores leads a blue- white flag ( the colored areas in the ratio 1:1 ) with the coat of arms of the Azores in the center.

The 19 counties in the Azores have their own flags, which largely follow the guidelines for Portuguese municipal flags, sometimes more, sometimes less. A one-time deviation for municipal coats of arms and flags in Portugal shows the city of Horta, the used instead of a brick, a golden coat of arms crown. The individual towns run their own flags.
