Flag of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands

The Flag of the Cocos Islands was officially adopted on 6 April 2004.

Description and significance

The flag is green and shows in the fly in gold the Southern Cross in accordance with the flag of Australia, in the center a crescent and in the upper leech a golden disc which carries a palm tree. The crescent refers to the Sunni Malays, who form the majority of the population in the islands. The palm tree symbolizes the name of the island on which earlier copra was recovered.

History

The flag was designed in early 2003 on the Cocos Islands. The official adoption took place on 6 April 2004. Besides leading the islands as Shire an additional flag alongside the flag of the Territory and the Australian flag. This is a logo on a white background.
