Flag of the Northern Territory

The flag of the Northern Territory was designed by Robert Ingpan and introduced on 1 July 1978. It differs markedly from those of the Australian states, as it is not a variant of the British Blue Ensign. By design, it is reminiscent of the flag of the Australian Capital Territory.

On the ocher flight of the flag a typical plant is shown in white, the Sturt 's Desert Rose ( Gossypium sturtianum ); this is, however, (instead of botanically correctly five) presented with seven petals. It was announced on July 12, 1961 as the emblem of the Northern Territory. The siebenstrahlige black star in the Rose is analogous to the Commonwealth of Australia Star flag for the six states and the Northern Territory. The ocher symbolizes the rust- red color that dominates the landscape. The Southern Cross on the Liekseite appears in the form of white stars on a black field.

The ceremony of flag introduction was the occasion of the permit to self-government of the Northern Territory performed on a dockside place in Darwin and solemnly recognized with 19 -gun salute to the HMAS Derwent.
